Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
This is by far the most common question we hear. Most people accept that it works, even if they don’t quite know how. But most often, we hear from both men and women, does it hurt? Well, you will feel something. Depending on your pain tolerance, it may feel like a small pinch or like a rubber band is snapping on you. Most people are fine though. Take a look at this video of a patient receiving laser hair removal at our medical spa facility. We promise this unflinching lady is just a normal person, and not some pain-resistant superhuman. If you are really concerned about pain, give us a call and speak with one of our medical spa physicians who can give you a better idea about pain management options.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal works by sending a concentrated beam of light into the skin. As the light passes through the top layer of skin, it converts to heat. The heat is then absorbed by dark pigment in hair follicles. The heat damages the follicle enough to inhibit future growth of hairs.
How Do I Prepare For Laser Hair Removal?
Unlike waxing, you don’t want to come into the med spa with hairy legs or underarms. You will want to come in freshly shaved – not waxed. When you wax, hair is pulled out by the follicle, leaving nothing for the heat of the laser to target. So if you’ve recently been waxed, you’ll need to wait several weeks for the follicles to develop again, then shave, then come in for your appointment.
Additionally, since the laser targets the dark hair follicles, it is best to stay out of the sun for a few weeks before your appointment so there is a greater contrast between the color of your skin and your hair follicles.
Is Laser Hair Removal A One-And-Done Procedure?
We call laser “permanent hair removal” not “instant hair removal.” Because hair grows on different cycles, you may need to come in for several rounds of laser treatment to truly be hair-free. Additionally, if you want full body laser hair removal, we most likely will not be able to do this all in one day. Consistency and patience is key for a few months, and then you can be hair free permanently!
Does Laser Hair Removal Work On Everyone?
Laser hair removal can work for most people. The ideal candidate would be someone with incredibly pale skin and very dark hair – which we all know is not the most common combination. Men and women with light colored hair follicles, as well as those with dark skin tones, can absolutely still get laser hair removal. We may need to adjust the type of laser we are using and the method but it will almost always work. The only time laser hair removal is not recommended is if you have an adverse reaction when we do a test patch. Some people, though rare, will experience hyperpigmentation or scarring from a laser treatment.
