At Body Sensation Spa, we specialize in body sculpting and cellulite removal and reduction. Our medical spa has non-invasive treatment options for cellulite that can help sculpt the surface of the skin to reduce the appearance of cellulite. But before we tell you about that, it is important to understand the anatomy of cellulite, and why so-called magic cellulite creams and pills simply do not effectively treat cellulite.
What causes cellulite?
Cellulite is characterized by bumps and dimples on your skin. Cellulite has been described as having a cottage cheese or orange peel texture, and is something that many women and men try to get rid of. Underneath your skin there are fibrous connective tissues that tether your skin to your muscles. When fat cells enlarge, they push up against the skin while the connective tissues pull the skin down towards the muscle, causing the dimples and bumps that are associated with cellulite.
Do only women have cellulite?
About 90 percent of women will get cellulite in their lifetimes, and only around 10 percent of men will experience it. Why is this? The main reason is that the connective tissues described above are different on men and women. Men have more connective tissues that are thicker and in a crisscross pattern. Women, on the other hand, have fewer bands that are thinner and vertical. This means there is more space for fat to squeeze through the tissues to the surface of the skin on women. Additionally, men and women, for the most part, store fat differently. Women tend to carry fat near their waist, thighs, and backsides, whereas men usually carry their fat on their stomachs. Since thighs and bottoms are more susceptible to cellulite, it makes sense that women would experience cellulite more frequently.
If cellulite is caused from enlarged fat cells, why do some skinny people have cellulite?
Even thin women and men can have cellulite. Everybody has a layer of fat between their muscles and skin, no matter how skinny someone is. Additionally, everybody has those connective tissues, and the length and elasticity of those bands vary from person to person. So being thin does not exempt you from having cellulite, but the combination of having longer or stronger connective tissues and a thinner layer of fat will make it less likely for dimples to show up on your skin.
How do I get rid of my cellulite?
Now that we know what causes cellulite, how do we get rid of it? Diet and exercise can help reduce the layer of fat between the muscles and the skin, but won’t always get rid of cellulite completely. Again, even the skinniest people can have cellulite simply due to the anatomy of their skin and muscle layers.
Body Sensation Spa uses the latest cellulite-blasting technology on the market. Our cellulite contouring treatment sculpts and shapes the surface of your skin by using our Vela Slim Cellulite Contour Sculpting system. This system works by using a combination of rolling, suction, infrared light, and radiofrequency. When the applicator is applied to the skin, the machine creates gentle heat that when coupled with the rolling motions, melts and reshapes the fat, helping to smooth the surface of the skin. It also encourages increased blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, which helps to increase metabolism in the area and decrease cellulite.
In addition, for some of our patients we may mesotherapy cellulite contouring. This involves a series of microinjections administered by experienced professionals in our state-of-the-art medical spa facilities. This treatment targets the fatty tissue layer to reduce and smooth out cellulite.
